Under 1200fps I believe, and I was testing a 12ga Lefever DS w/ 28 twist barrels.

Are you sure of those figures? If the gun weighs 7 to 7 1/2 lbs it should not kick hard. I hope someone here can help you since it makes no sense to me. If it kicks up into your cheekbone and that is where you are feeling it then gun fit would be the answer. Beyond that I am clueless.
So many guns, so little time!

7/8 oz. at 1200 fps, 7.5 pound shotgun = 14.4 ft/lbs of free recoil 1 oz. at 1180 fps (2 3/4 Dram), 7.5 pound shotgun = 17.3 ft/lbs of free recoil 1 1/8 oz. at 1200, (3 Dram) 7.5 pound shotgun = 23.0 ft/lbs of free recoil

Yes, I am sure that the powder folks provided that calculation with their tool. Using Clays.
Im not getting whacked in the cheek, just a whollop to the shoulder.

Thanks for the calculations Drew. Im not sure how to interpret them other than the lower the number for free recoil, the less discomfort I feel.
Not interested in wasting anyones time, with my newbie stuff, yet I spent a good deal of time finding a low pressure load that I happened to assume would also be pleasant to shoot. Back to the drawing board, and hopefully I can use the components I have, because I have a lot of all of it.

Somethings amiss if a 7/8 oz. load at around 1200 is kicking you too hard in that gun. I have shot 1300 of those loads a day, for four days, out of a 6 lb. 5 oz. Beretta 697 SPII Sporting, and never had a bruise or any recoil issue. Any tenderness in the shoulder pocket would be gone the next morning. And, I only weighed 165 lbs. at that time. I know people react to recoil differently, but that doesn't seem right to me.

I havent shot in a couple weeks, but Im typically recoil sensitive.
Double checked, AGAIN, and the 7/8 charge bar is in the press, and the powder bushing is #33, which yields 18.6gr of Clays in the chart. Recipe calls for 18.8. When I weighed the powder throws, they were all around those figures. 5200psi, 1200ft/s.
Should have shot a few before loading as many as I did.
In general, joints are starting to hurt a lot more than they used to, and that will get worse.

How about crimp depth and its effect on velocity and pressure? The look very nice to me, as if from the factory, but I haven't measured them yet. http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/reloadin...epth-shotshells

Crimp should be kept as near as possible to a factory crimp. I once read where a balistician said he could keep all other components "Identical" yet get any max chamber pressure he wanted by merely varying the crimp depth, within reason of course.

I measured a handful and have 0.035 - 0.050 crimp depths. They are 8-point, Remington Nitro 27 hulls, and look close to factory. Maybe not quite as tidy as new, but quite good.
