I belong to two clubs here in California.
One in the Angeles National Forest and another in the mountains high above Santa Barbara.
I consider both of them to be "Rustic" in that staging for shooting is generally done off of the tailgate of one's pick-up truck.

I wanted cover for a very few remaining doubles that firstly didn't involve the assembly of said guns in the wilderness,
and I wanted to have nothing to do with buckles, zippers, snaps, hooks, Velcro or anything
that might mar any of the surfaces that I've come to admire.

I've got plenty of beautiful conventional leather cases but wanted something different.
Something not mass marketed, something simple.
Feasibility studies, market research, engineering, prototypes, material acquisition, blah, blah, blah...
I doubled the hide to a thickness of 2mm.
3/8" lambskin shearling was used to gently cradle my modest cabinet contents.

Wrapped in the comfort of my workbench.
Transported in the safety of the cab of my truck.
Gently placed on the tailgate prior to unwrapping and shooting.
Back on the wrap between rounds.
Wrapped and returned to the safety of the cab prior to the drive home.
Nothing could be finer! This Model 21 is the longest I'll wrap with 30" barrels and a LOP of 15 1/16
and all doubles suitable for wrapping are sub 6lbs, barely a wisp of a gun.

Great idea! It sure beats a rusty tail gate or bare concrete as a platform for prepping your gun for hunting, shooting or photographs.
Cheers!

Bob, your new 'case' looks good. But isn't it sort of a re-invention of the moving van quilts you can get from Ryder?...Geo

That is nice, but I think you need more secure straps with buckles. Those straps will come undone at some point and your piece could end up on asphalt, gravel, etc.

The work was done in a custom furniture shop.
They used commercial machines for the leather and shearling..
They really finished it beautifully.

I can see one potential flaw there is nothing to hold the fold in ends securely. There is a chance that the gun may drop out butt first if you have it vertical and holding the barrels section. And if chance has anything to do with it "what cant go wrong will go wrong. Securing of the fold in ends should be strongly considered.

I thought I had worked out all the potential “floors”.

Snug ties hold flaps in place.
Somewhat horizontal carry precludes disaster.
