In my opinion, the time to appraise a nominal loss for an insurance company is after the loss. As long as the gun is not a rare and valuable collector piece, I see the insurance company writing the check with no prior appraisal needed. A fifty dollar appraisal on a five hundred dollar gun is a waste of money. I am in the D.C. area and I appraise guns, but only those that should be appraised. Save your money.
