I'd suspect that the name should be "Bertoli" with an "I" at the end. I lived in Rome for 5 years and at one time my Italian was quite good.

That name of course reminds of Gino Bartali, the famous Italian bicycle racer of the 1930's-50's. He and Fausto Copi were huge sports stars. Bartali famously had a beautiful Franchi Imperiale Montecarlo 12 ga SxS that's now in a firearms collection in Italy.
