After shooting two different sporting clays courses, I've come to the conclusion I need help! The targets I hit, I crushed, the rest were cleanly missed. My self diagnosis is that while my right eye is dominant it is not by much and the left one likes to play with my mind. I shoot a great deal better with the left eye closed. If I was just shooting clays I could live with that. I hate the dirty looks my dogs give me when I let a bird they worked hard to find and I don't even get a feather sometimes. So, I need an instructor, that understands sxs's eye dominance issues, and shooting over pointing dogs. Does anyone know of such an animal? Thanks, Mark

Chances are good you can self-diagnose your problem and improve your shooting by shooting a LOT of practice targets along with a fellow shooter who knows his stuff and can watch your gun mount and approach to the target. Try to shoot as much as possible with some really good AA/Master class shooters who can critique your misses. Be sure to let them know ahead of time you want their input. I've probably learned as much form them as from instructors.
Just remember this: Sportin' ain't huntin'. JR

I got really lucky in that I found an instructor that thinks like me, and I can connect with. I watched his video and remember thinking "I can do that". Mind you, I wasn't trying to get better at game shooting, I wanted to be the best I could be at sporting clays...........and they're nowhere near the same thing. I believe I reached my peak at dove shooting years ago, maybe as young as 18.
I took instruction from John Higgins, Marty Fischer, Bill Kempfer...........but I never really connected with an instructor until I got to know Bill McGuire, and shot with him. Please understand that is not an indictment of John, Marty or Bill. They are all very sharp guys. Some people just connect better with certain people. I was blessed to find the right one. I get more out of one hour with Bill than I do a year of shooting "practice rounds" with my buds. But, teaching how to kill game is not Bill's strongpoint, although he is an avid hunter.............teaching you how to "kill" clays is.

SRH I think Stan has caught the key perfectly, instruction is personal and finding the right guy who can teach you best is an individual thing. Not every great instructor is great for everyone. It is true with guns, as well as school.
