Thanks for the tips and insights. The rubber eraser being the most benign, I think I will give that a go first. Second up will be the flitz or simichrome, since it seems there is less chance I will end up with unsighlty scratches with those than steel wool. The original finish is not far from mirror anyway, so I am not worried about overshining it. I will post to let you all know how it goes.
Not surprisingly, the discoloration only occurred after a particularly hot day (mid-90's). On several previous occasions in cooler weather I had neglected to immediately wipedown without any problem. I also happened to wear a glove on one hand that day because of the hot barrels. It could have been the glove, although I doubt it. In any event, from now on I will be more careful.

You could try a worn soft toothbrush and toothpaste which is very cleansing, but also mild.

I use floor wax applied and not polished off to protect non-blued and blued receiver and barrels on my guns,as my palms seem to exude sweat that really corrodes, so much so that I keep thin cotton gloves in the car and put them on if I am going to handle guns in a gunshop. Wonder why this afflicts not everybody? Mike

I have had similar problems and have used every thing from pencil erasers, toothpaste, flitz, semichrome, to polishing compound. One other "trick" is to use a dremel (perish the thought!!!) with a dry buff, and just BARELY brush the surface on lowest speed. Then put a coat of automotive wax on it and buff off with an old diaper.

Steve, If you still have some of those marvelous "old diapers" around you must be a young man. I can't wait for my daughters to start sending me their cast offs but there won't be any if they use a diaper service! David

I imagine other foods can have similar effects.
