Ted, Wouldnt a very light oil like RemOil places on the magazine tube, especially with Teflon being present, lend the Auto-5 guns to more recoil than a more viscous oil, or is my thinking wrong on that? That's easy. The more friction you take out of the system, the less recoil impulse it takes to drive the action full stroke. Thus, reducing friction allows you use a lighter shell. The action stops moving rearward at the same place no matter the shell used. Therefore the total energy stored by the spring is always the same. A heavy shell fired with a low recoil setting will result in a faster action stroke. The reason an automatic has lower perceived recoil is because the action spreads the recoil out over time. The total recoil is always the same.

Thanks. Also, the 0W-20 synthetic oil makes good sense to me for very cold weather conditions. I think middle ground has been met.

Thanks. Also, the 0W-20 synthetic oil makes good sense to me for very cold weather conditions. I think middle ground has been met. My recollection is that the extreme cold weather lubricant of choice for the A5 and other recoil operated shotguns was graphite. Very Sparingly. I have several older A5 manuals that also recommend the 30wt oil for warm weather lube. In the extreme cold, I personally ran mine dry.

The A5 is, of course, a long recoil action. The barrel & bolt recoil independent of the stock assembly. When the friction ring is set for heavy loads more friction is applied to the magazine tube, slowing the barrel's movement. This will result in the recoil being transferred simultaneously to the stock. The lower the friction the faster the barrel will recoil & less is transferred to the stock until it Hits the buffer. Shoot heavier loads than the gun is set up to handle & expect to "Get Your Teeth Rattled" when the bolt rams into the stop buffer.

This might help, Buzz: I own both, not sure why. Oh, wait, they were my Dads, that is why. The SBE literally hasnt been fired in 6 or 7 years, the Browning, about 3 or 4. Dads taste in guns was a bit different than mine. Not better or worse, just different. Best, Ted Ted, I have a Benelli SBE ii just like your gun. I traded a 20 ga jammamatic Franchi for it (never could get that Franchi to run, dry or wet, a single shot even with Rem express....maybe the magazine recoil spring needed replaced?). Anyway, the SBE ii will not reliably eject 1 oz loads. I tried some Fiocchi shooting dynamics and even though they are fairly hot 1 oz loads it would regularly jam with those shells. Benelli tells you the guns will only reliably throw out 1 1/8 oz shells and they are right. Didnt know that when I made the trade, I do now.

That is a SBE 1, Buzz. It isnt actually reliable with loads under 1 1/4 oz, according to the instructions.
It isnt actually reliable, period, and I have the receipts from H&K where they attempted to make it so on three occasions.
I think it worked OK with big stuff, 3 and bigger, after H&K was done with it. For years, it was a really expensive single shot, that refused to go into battery, after it was fired.
Im not a waterfowler, and have virtually no use for the gun.
Best, Ted
