Forgotten that Canada was in with China way before Nixon went to the mountain? Forgetting that China is the rising power, that leadership is coming from Europe and China, Iran seeming future regional balance of power, and the US still powerful and influential but in decline, giving the finger to its allies, choking with America's adversary Russia, its valued institutions in turmoil. Don't worry about Canada. We'll remain your ally, big trading partner, good neighbour and let you win a game now and then.

....I've never had a bill....
....We know it's not free; it comes from our taxes. Well, I'm offended. Actually, I'm impressed. Swimming in sludge, yet you pay 20-25% more than joe average American for a gallon of gas due to taxes. Got your boot on the neck of the poor who subsidize the healthcare for rich white folks, eh. Sign me up.

You have to admit to at least snickering a little. The US, President Trump, set an unenforceable, arbitrary, dare I say misogynistic trade negotiating deadline, and Canada capitulated. Just an awful display of eroding respect for the US, eh?

So, Canadians are not only paying their hospital bills with taxes, they're subsidizing Americans who come there for surgery, too?
SRH Stan, Nobody, but nobody, pays more for health care than Americans, and it often pretty poor health care at that. Just one of a billion examples. https://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/04/healt...enthal&_r=0

I wasn't talking about American health care costs. I was addressing how Canadians evidently, and ridiculously, subsidize other countries' citizens to come there and get cut rate surgery.
I've never argued that American health care was the cheapest......or even less expensive. But, you quote the "Times" and I'll tell you about my personal experiences, okay? I wouldn't trade my health care professionals for those in any country. It's all about priorities. I choose to pay for group health insurance, through private medical coverage, and through Medicare. It ain't cheap, but how many things worth having are?

May God bless America and those who defend her.

....The total cost including air fare to and from Canada, the surgery, and hospital bill was $3k. He said the hospital was like a hotel and the food was outstanding. Gil I'd have two, I think, reasonable questions. First, did paying cash move him ahead of Canadians who're subject to a waiting list? And second, are the amenities costing medical services and supplies? There're Americans who risk life and limb to save a buck or two in Mexican health clinics, I think your buddy chose wisely for his situation. Craig, the Shouldice family are close friends. In fact just saw them all in mid September, celebrating a birthday. Its a private, for profit hospital, grandfathered into the system because at the time it was the worlds leading hernia specialist. They are told by the government how much they can charge for Canadian patients and charge what they want for anyone else. Doubtful cash took him to the front of the line. Theyre just damn good. And Gils friend isnt the only one who has compared it to a hotel. They get many patients asking if they can come back. Private, for profit enterprise in health care at its best

With Canada and China, for starters. The president saying he didn't like the Ukrainian chick raised her position significantly. We knew she was doing a good job, supported by our opposition parties, but getting under the president's skin was a dividend. Maybe enough to be future PM. OH MY GOD! Could you misread events more? We negotiated horribly, achieved none of Trudeaus stated objectives going in and escaped with our economic life. It didnt raise her position, it exposed how useless she and Turd-boy actually are. Total amateurs.

Stan, it would be ridiculous to subsidize other countries' citizens. They pay the going rate. The difference in costs of care between here and there is so great that Canadians often charter medavac jets to take them home for treatment. More than 50 years ago I had a misdiagnosed heart attack that put me in hospital for a month. My taxes paid for it. The hospital said that it would have cost at least $100,000 in the US---then.

The Shouldice Clinic is an exception in the Canadian health care system. It was founded by a surgeon in the 1940s and allowed to continue as a private hospital when Medicare was established in the 1960s. The clinic is very selective about who they admit (i.e. if you are more than 20% of your ideal weight you will be refused) Groin repair is typically a day surgery in Ontario, but at the Shouldice Clinic it can be a 3 to 5 day stay. Factors such as these make there success rate very high. Ontario residents only pay for the difference between semi-private and private rooms versus ward rate. There are separate rates for Non-Ontario Canadian residents and out of country patients. In theory, it is illegal for doctors who bill the public health-care system to charge patients. IMHO, Canada needs to adopt a progressive two-tier healthcare system to provide timely access to healthcare and to take the strain off the public system.
