I'm headed to Bejing for a combined biz/vacation trip. I'll have about 4 days to look around. On my list of things to see is the usual tourist attractions: Great Wall, Tienamin Sq, Forbidden city, pearl markets, silk markets. But, I'm wondering if there's a war museum or other cite of interest to a gun buff?

Find out where the guys they hired away from Tony Galazon are working. Don't breath the fumes coming from the toy factorys. Don't stock up on dog food or animal feed while you are there, either. The kids do the same thing in the streets that dogs do here, so, watch your step. Try not to end up in the clink, I'll bet it's nasty. Keep any comments about Taiwan to yourself, capitalist pig-dog. Have a great trip.
Best,
Ted

When are you going, Chuck? A buddy who left today for a week of salmon fishing in Labrador just got back from Beijing.

Try to talk to the locals and find the bridge - every town has one. It's the bridge the toss newborn girls off in the middle of the night. Having a girl in China means you can't have a boy.

If you think I'm lying, think again.

The Great Wall has at least two turist places near Beijing. One is much older and there is a recently (10 years or less) opened one, named Simatai. We found Simatai much more interesting because it had not been so extensively restored.

Keep your eyes open on the bus ride to either of these. Beijing and surrounds is a massive metropolitan area that has to be seen to began to appreciate.

There are many very traditional resturants and theaters that we enjoyed greatly, especially try one of the traditional ones that specialize in Peking Duck . You will need to go with a person that speaks Mandarin (the local dialect of Chinese) and the theaters will be a lot more interesting if you do understand some Mandarin, as well as Chinese history/cultur.

Expect some of the worst smog I have ever seen on earth, and it covers nearly all of China!!

King,
I'm leaving L.A. on Aug 29 and returning Sept 5. I have about 4 days for looking about.

Guys,
Thanks for all the warnings. I'll watch my step and what I eat. I think China is trying to move forward in getting in step with the west. I believe that's one reason we've been invited.

Chuck:

It's hard to get in trouble in 4 days unless you are really looking for it. The things you have on your list will take all of that time .... and more. Unless you are a steak and potatoes guy it's hard to have a bad meal. Don't buy any famous brand rip-off's. They'll just take them away at US Customs. Unless you can really judge quality buy only "souvenir" silk and pearls. Beware of real / fake antiquities one will cost way to much and the other will get you detained at outbound customs. I usually bring back unusual kitchen implements ...... By the way it's not a bad idea to get an English speaking guide .... doesn't cost much and can really enhance the experience when time is short.

Chuck,
I left Beijing for the western environs (Kunming ) in June and am heading to the hills and moors of the green Isle for the grouse opener, Sept 1st.

Beijing
Looks like you have a full schedule.
The air is .....well not clean.
The sheer volume of construction alone- central business district and around the Olympic venue- is a sight to see.

If time permits, a couple of places off the beaten path, not really, this is Beijing.

Kong Miao - The Confucian Temple - If you are short of time be sure you see Dacheng Hall, Kuiwen Pavilion, is a library and Apricot Altar , the best representatives of the Temple's architecture.

The Wangfujing Street Food Market (Donganmen Night Market ) is definitely worth a stroll day or night is best imo. Food- Quanjude (the original P roast duck) - off peak time only or you will never get in.

Enjoy your time.
