The old stuff required cleaning barrels immediately to prevent corrosion. I have some 7 X 57 if Canadians interested; US won't let it cross the border.

Most of the corrosion issues were related to corrosive primers, not smokeless powders. The problem generally arose when folks switched from black to smokeless, Because many believed it was no longer necessary to clean their guns. When shooting black shooters of the day realized the need for cleaning & this took care of the primer issue.

I have some red and yellow box 9x57 made by Kynoch. I had always wondered about the corrosive priming and the cordite loading. One day, I decided to pull a bullet on one and to my surprise, it didnt appear to be cordite based on the pictures I could find on the internet. I also found it to be non-corrosive and I believe I read that if the box is marked with the "keep out of reach of children" warning it was a later production and non-corrosive. However, your own testing should be done prior to using in your guns.

Definitely primers, miller. It seemed like a brown fur grew in the barrel from any neglect after using the red-and-yellow box Kynoch.
