No idea but that is very interesting. It looks infinitely adjustable. What is it chambered? Thanks for sharing

What a fine piece of work, and from Birminham, England of all places. It looks to be a sight from some sort of artillery attachment(guess). The answer may require an application of geometry.
Kind Regards,

That rib is about as beautiful as any engraving work I have ever seen on one. Considering the engraving, I would think this was built for a serious gunner with deep pockets. Can't imagine its use but for long range shooting. Appears to me to be a range finding mechanism. Best, John

This thing belongs in DGJ, I would buy it too. It's made for Boarjager. Just look at boar engraving and high seat chased in the stock shield. Somethimes one sees folding sight with three notches on same blade for running baor shooting, but this piece take the cake. This thing is precious! ![](/forums/images/graemlins/default/cool.gif)

A truly unique piece. I don't recall ever seeing damascus like that before. There is a wooden ball in the patch box. Is that for the end for a cleaning rod or is it part of a palm rest?

It's for cleaning rod, Pete. My thouts are the following. This DR was not boar shooting only, it's for big game such as moose, bison, deer etc. Probably it was heavy conical bullet of different weights and sliding sight helped to find POI at 500 yards at sliding sight position #1. Then moving sliding sight forward it was easy to find and to shoot at 600 yards, 700, 800... But I can see one big problem here, moving sliding sight forwards the line of aim becomes shorter and poor acuuracy as result. Guess it was interesting, but unfortunatly useless device.
