Worked! In case you are wondering, this is a Hitt's flare gun.
I collect fireworks stuff. Hitt's was an old name in fireworks and based in Seattle. They invented flashpowder, derived from photographic flash pan powder, shortly after WW1. The powder has been used in Chinese flashcrackers since that time.
