King, IMO, magic happens when a shooter finds a gun that fits his/her individual needs, all of them in the same gun: weight, balance, swing efforts, stock dimensions, gripping area size and shape, cost, and (never to be discounted) aesthetics.

Why? What makes this gun "magic" for you? Joy of shooting it? You shoot it best of your guns? Yes, why? (and the foregoing is meant purely as an honest question)

King told us what makes his Parker 16 gauge shotgun "magic".

See, it comes up to his eyes without needing hands to lift it! Only a little "guidance". Even Annie Oakley couldn't shoot with hands tied behind her back. But it seems as if King could. Magic just comes naturally to certain folks. I wonder if he was a close friend with Harry Houdini too? That might explain it.

How explain magic, Don? Why do the gods shine on us one day and not so much on others but every time with this circa 1889 Parker?

My sense of it is every gun before it seemed dead in comparison, "lighter" than others of same gauge and dimensions. Fit seems to me the answer

I shoot it well. Believing in magic and miracles helps. I don't use it for serious water fowling, wearing white canvas smock over parka and oilskins. Fit again.

Destry, here for sea ducks from sink boxes on the rolling Atlantic, took one look at the Parker, ready to peel off big ones, knowing well no one lets go of magic.

A son, using it on his first hunt, fired his first shot at a streaking black before I could say too far. Dropped it dead. Never hunted again, said it was too easy, no skill.

Nothing is safe or certain with magic.

I had a friend and neighbor in Jamaica who showed me a cased pair of saw handled dueling pistols presented to his great grandfather (formerly the Viceroy of India) by the king of England. You did not need to count features to tell they were the best effort by a top class maker. They were made by Durs Egg.

Sooo... my definition of 'best gun' is the best effort of a top tier maker.

I prefer Gough Thomas to Michael McIntosh. .He was an Engineer, not an English major. He dealt in reality, not magic.

Hey [censored] Joe I thought that moniker would stick in your craw. In case you don't know what it means, I'll explain in terms you won't fathom:

Chloropidae (DP) Gnat: A slang term that describes a person nobody really likes, that is always present or appears in a particular circle of people, bugging, bothering or annoying. He never goes away even after constant "swatting". That fits you to a "T".

Beg pardon, but I have to disagree with you on this point. The "trick" was not being able to make a best work gun. Rather, it was the ability to get a commission to do so. Retailers, as well as trade masters, all knew who to approach within the trade for best work and how to get a best gun to their specifications and with their names. Brand Value (what a maker's name adds to a gun's value) is much more due to the maker's ability to attract commissions for high Original Quality grade guns. The ability to attract commissions is highly tied to name recognition the shop was able to grow and which social circles of London dealt with which dealer(s). Social circle members tended to trade with select tradesmen for craft goods. Buying from a shop that generally traded with a higher circle was risky business. It might be construed as social climbing and, unless you had the money or extraordinary skill to back it up, that was risky indeed.
