Has anyone found any treasures or items behind the buttplate on guns you've purchased? Just took a buttplate off a 16ga. Baker and a label was attached with one of the owners name and address. Tried to contact the man on the label and located a nephew to learn the man had passed 15 to 20 years ago with no close relatives that might be interested in knowing about the gun. Another 16 Flues had the buttstock hollowed out with a dozen stick matches rolled up in waxed paper. If the guy didn't carry a screw driver, I don't know how he would have gotten to them. A gun I looked at[JABC} had the name of a gunsmith who restocked said gun in 1952? What have you found? Randy

Randy,I once owned a 20g NID that had an old sales receit in the stock. It was from the Clevland OH area,it had an old 4 digit telephone # on the heading. The original owner had a scribbled note curseing anyone who sold the gun.
I also had an old 20g Model 21 with the original owners WW II draft card in it.The first thing I do after a gun purchase is check under ther buttplate.Dave

A buddy found a 1935 Kansas hunting license in the buttstock of his father-in-law's A5.

It's easy to get to the matches in an emergency situation. Bust the buttplate on a rock. Not a big deal if your cold and wet.

A Stevens 5100 I had once had about 10 oz of shot in a hollowed out area. Probably to balance it.

i purchased a Whitney rolling block sporting rifle at a gunshow years ago, under the buttplate was a map to something burried in a back yard. I still have the treasure map somewhere, a town in NY state, if I recall, no stinking address though!

I always insert a note indicating that the gun in question belongs to me. Also have included schematics and instructions as to proper loads.

I'm with you.. It sounds like fun. Fake treasure maps, combinations to safes let your imagination go wild. Fun.
