How do their prices compare to Turnbull?

Before I set up my own oven, I used Don for several pieces. His prices are really "dirt cheap" IF you disassemble and polish the parts you want done. He and his wife run the entire operation themselves-or they did a couple of years ago. Turn-around time is fast too. Don is about 1/3 Turnbull's price. Best, Dr. Bill

Turnbull, $970.00 including return shipping, all disassembly and reassembly, $200 of that was reengraving a VH Grade Parker, $200 was polishing. It included (carbon?) bluing the trigger guard and I think the triggers. All forend iron was case hardened also. Now, what is the price for other vendors for the same service? I know it's cheaper, but how much? I'm not in favor of any one vendor, I just happen to have those figures handy.

That exact job...plus opening both chokes....just cost my buddy $2,900. It was, however, completed 2 months sooner than promised.

The same job on an Elsie cost him $800 elsewhere. But it doesn't carry the Turnbull cachet.

That was me with the frame distortations. Actually there were two of them. One colored by Color Case Co. and the other by Classic Guns, in Beecher Il.

I don't think there was anything wrong with the process from each comapny and I don't blame anyone for this warpage. Both guns were Parker GH with damascus barels on both of them. Both guns had to have the barrels refit and both guns are working well now. Refitting the barrels on the second gun was nerve wracking as it wasn't mine. I was doing it for a friend in Seattle. Refit time took 6 hours but it is tight on the face of the frame and works well.

Regards, Gordon

Thank you Gordon. That was helpful.

Would you guess that there might be some internal stress built into the metal prior to the work that causes this?

Wow!! Nice job. I always heard that they did good work. Do you guys spray varnish these before/after you get them back together? Good luck.

In my experience, and I have had warppage, the problem seems to be in the spacers or lack of them. Oscar was very particular about spacers and I think he was right. Further he would not re-do anything unless he annealed first. Best, Dr. BILL
