Quail hunting in Feb,.
Anyone have any recommendations or suggestions for a late season quail hunt in warmer territory than the Northeast in February?
Native birds or preserve birds are ok. Really want to get out of the cold for a week and do some bird hunting.
Looking for recommendations on lodges, etc.
As my other post says, not looking for 5 star resort. Want clean comfortable accommodations with good simple food. And birds.
Want to bring our own dogs.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

Ft Campbell Army Base, Ft. Campbell Kentucky...still has a huntable population of wild quail...should be open till Feb.28th. Kinda of a pain in the ass to get in there...back ground check gun registration but most likely worth the effort.

You being x military it'll be easier for you plus you'll get first draw.

Forget Texas this year. Numbers have collapsed and even the die hard hunters have hung it up.

I hunted quail at Southwinds Plantation in South Georgia last year. I thought it was reasonably priced and enjoyed the experience immensely. We flushed a few wild coveys while getting after the pen raised ones.

Having hunted all of my life on private lands I have never done the pay-preserves much. The only two times I did, was when invited as a guest, and those two times were at Burnt Pine Plantation, and at Barnsley Gardens. Of the two Barnsley was the best hunting, and the best birds. We got into one wild covey that day.

That said, the best released bird hunting I can imagine is on my friend's private place near me. Released in August, his birds are so wild acting by mid-October that the coveys will often flush wild at the sound of you walking up behind the dogs from quite a distance. They often won't even hold for the pointers, flushing so far ahead of you that you don't even get to shoot. That's a good thing.

I'm sure some more guys will make suggestions based on their personal experiences.

Brian...

Here is what someone posted on another forum.

Wintergreen is part of a large farm that raises/supplies Bobwhites for hunting preserves. It appeared that Wintergreen has three hunting areas. Each area is about 30 or 40 acres. The areas are thinned pine woods that are burned annually. Broom straw, partridge pea and lespedeza mixed in the pine. Same habitat as found on the Georgia Quail Plantations.

This is a put and take hunt. You pay for birds released. Birds are released prior to your arrival. Someone takes you to your hunting area and explains your boundaries and in my case left to hunt on my own. I was the only person hunting without a guide and his dogs.

Birds appear to to have been released in pairs. The most birds I found together was one group of three and another of four. Other than that singles and pairs. The bird quality is exceptional. All clean fast flushes. Birds are as good as or better that many high dollar Plantations.

I have hunted a number of Quail Plantations in Georgia and Florida.

Those places have the lodges, the fine dining, the mule wagons and the birds are in covies. But those covies are usually only 4 to 6 birds. Wintergreen does not offer those amenities. It's also not $1000/day.

Also on those Plantations if you take away the wagon ride to the bird field your still only hunting 30 or 40 acres.

Anyway. Wintergreen is exactly what I was looking for. Good cover, good birds and hunting my own dog. Only problem is it's not closer to my summer or winter homes, as I will be returning.

Joe have you heard good numbers at Ft. Campbell? I've thought about going down there and giving it a try. My brother use to go and deer hunt and he said it was a lot of hoops to jump through.

I used to fall turkey there religiously...ran into a lot of coveys. Heard quail hunters doing a lot of shooting in adjacent areas.

The hoops are not as bad as they used to be...go online and open an "ISportsman" account the back ground check and gun registration will take a couple hours once you get there...plenty of hotel rooms close by. You can hunt it with a Kentucky or Tennessee license...a hunter education card is required no matter your age.

They keep good records on the quail kills give them a call.

Alabama's season goes through Feb. also. You might find good preserve. The local one is closed now, couldn't make it financially. Sorry I can't suggest good places, I never hunted preserves, except at Ft. Bragg. Quail hunting on private land is affected by "pine tree orchards", emphasis on deer hunting, coyotes, etc. I miss being able to follow a bird dog.
