A horn Francotte buttplate listed on gun broker. Perhaps similar to what you might need.

I'm in Central Pennsylvania.

Dewey is closest. Congrats on the gun, and for having the good smarts to find a good pro.

The local 870 wrench wont cut it on this one.

Ted thinks he knows everything, and has never entertained the policy of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". He's also judicious and duly diligent by an exponent of 3. So listen to him and spend a lot of money on unnecessary work.

But it doesn't need a refinish or a workover, just a little tlc like a good bore scrub, a toothbrush solvent scrub of the action and ribs, some hinge pin grease. If something breaks or fails, have it seen about. When I said "leave it alone and shoot it", it meant refrain from destroying character and patina.

You can tell everything is hunky-dory with that gun just by looking at a few internet pictures?

What an amazing dude. Maybe you should provide a service to guys like Kirk, Dewey, Del, and Paul letting them know what guns need some maintenance, and what guns dont. Im sure they could use a guy with that skill.

Pretty sure you and your 32 barreled stuff will be just fine. For the rest of us, qualified individuals doing some maintenance goes a long way.

Ted

David - that's a great find. With some gentle cleaning and renewing it should be good for another 116 years. Congratulations.

For a good 'smith, try Dennis Potter in Muskego, WI. (414) 425-4830

One reason to remove the buttplate and at least check the condition of the stock, regardless of what you determine to do with the buttplate: Guns with horn buttplates can have worms that have made their way into the stock. A friend of mine had one of those. We referred to it as "wormwood". Was fine once the infestation was cleaned out.

I too agree that at least a strip and clean only makes sense on a gun over 100 years old about which you know nothing other than what you can see from the outside.

Another reason to remove the buttplate is: sometimes you find information about the original owner written on the butt or on a note under the plate.
