My wife asked me what I wanted for Valentines Day. Told her I could not decide between a new Lab puppy or another engraved 42 with a solid rib or maybe a vent rib. Been looking at one of each. You know the engraved 42s just shoot better. The puppy holds more promise from an enjoyment end as I love to train them and watch them figure it out. Damn if she didnt say why not both. We are not going to be here field ever. Think Ill keep her. Got to make a couple of calls about a dog. Jon...do you realize how silly that sounds. I been married 42 years I'm not expecting a silly card let alone a gun. I call bull chit jOn... You should be on Jerry Springer because like he says "You can't make this chit up folks" Weird stuff happens. I casually mentioned once that I "might" buy a new boat... She said, "Well, you should". I did with no repercussions. I still kinda look at that one sideways. Alan

I envy you. The 42 is one thing but the dog is another. I would get another gun dog if I was reasonably sure I would outlive him. You can always find someone to take good care of a 42, but supporting your dog in a manner in which they are accustomed is a task.
I know if I brought a lab puppy home #1 wife would be chewing his food for him, and he would be eating better than I do, so that's not even an issue.
Now, If I brought home a 42 I might get "The Look" even if I said, "...it's just an old shotgun, and I don't even like pumps, and it's not like it's new or anything, it's pretty old, and it shoots these little bitty shells, can't hardly even hurt anything with it......".
But, good luck on the dog hunting. I remember getting my last lab. There were eight in the litter. The lady had them in a clothes basket. I put them all on the ground and one little male put his nose on the ground and headed off away from the rest which were climbing my leg to get petted. I pointed to the hunter and told her, "that's the one I want". He grew up to be "Boone". He would retrieve anything with feathers and anything without feathers. He could track a duck underwater and would retrieve a brick in three feet of water. He wouldn't actually point quail but he would look back at me like, "get ready!" Doves barely hit the ground before he was on them. Very soft mouth, and it was not uncommon for him to bring me live birds. He died five years ago. I sure miss him. I haven't had much desire to hunt birds since then. Most of the enjoyment was watching him work, and he loved to work. God, I love Labs.

Alan, I think we must have read some of the same books containing compilations of "things to tell wives about newly acquired shotguns." My wife could probably tell her own stories about the number of guns that I bought "for her."!!!

It takes 10 minutes a day to "train" a Lab. Start fundamental commands at seven weeks when their brains are fully formed. At four or five months of daily reinforcement you've a retriever to handle the usual chores and, as others said, ready to smoothen edges for college if that's where you want to go. The owner "makes" the dog.

Dogs have put a whole lot more into my life than Theyve ever taken from it.
Im in the market right now for a lab.
I dont require perfect conformation just biddability.
Typically, its a 15 year commitment. I happily make it in order to enjoy my falls on the marsh. And their friendship around the house.

Hawkering big green loogies down the throat of a frightened Lab for 10 minutes a day is likely to drown the poor animal King. There's a big difference between well behaved and dead. I'm very concerned about the welfare of Jake no.9

Puppies are just great. They keep you active and thinking about the right things!
I got an "extra" puppy in 2017. I already had a 7 year old, and a 10 month old dog. A [censored] from a breeding I had been waiting for had pups and I just had to have one! Now I have 3. The young ones may outlive me but we are having fun now!
I have enough guns and would rather spend the money on trips where I can use my springers!

He's doing really well, keith; 2-300m blind retrieves, jewel in the blind, MH. It's an old-time remedy repeated by modern trainers in their how-to books. I'll vouch that it works for me.

Joe, raised properly, 10 minutes daily of reinforcement is all it takes to keep a Lab tuned for mastery in the field. In fact, shorter times outside the kennel are better than too long with a handler. Labs are tractable, easily handled animals.
