Lately I've been noticing some postings to the effect that the poster wasn't going to get something or do something because of his age.
Guys, life is short and there are no do overs. If you can swing it physically and it won't affect your ability to care for your self and your family, i say go for it. Take that trip, buy that gun, get that puppy, knife, etc.
When i was a kid, i used to read all the safari books by Peter Hathaway Capstick and others. And I'd talk to my dad about buying a double rifle and going to Africa on safari. My dad always encouraged me to do it, telling me to go just as soon as i was able, even if i had to borrow the money to do it. To his way of thinking, by the time i was ready, it might be too late, because Africa would be closed to hunting or some such thing.
As i got older, i lost interest in going to Africa, but I've kept my Dad's advice in mind and used it to take a couple nice trips to S. America for doves and ducks, couple to Canada and I'm working on one to Paraguay for pigeons. And when i see a shotgun or something i really want (within reason), i get it. Nearly every time I've put something like that off for whatever reason, when i came back for it, it was too late.
So, don't put off getting that puppy because he might outlive you. Get him, train him and hunt him and make arrangements for him just in case. Same with guns, knives, trips, etc. Get 'em, use them and enjoy them in the outdoors and shooting sports that we all here love. Just my opinion and as my friends in the legal profession say, "free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it."
Nothing the government gives you is free.

In this case your free advice is sound advice, and worth following. In the past several years I've watched some number of my elders pass on and had to tend to their affairs. All the while getting my own affairs in order so that my sons will not have the headaches I had in that regard.
I suppose it has affected my thinking in a morbid way in that it seems everything I do is about preparing to die... I'm not even sick (except for that bit of thinking). I suppose it's time to do as Zig Ziglar says and get a "check-up from the neck up".
I still don't know if I'll get a dog (we have a rescue now, gun shy, non hunter but totally devoted to #1 wife), but I may take a few trips.
Thanks for the gravity check.
Alan

I like the way you think Goillini.
I resemble that.

I think taking one's yield to the field is sound advice. Karl

There are always adoptable dogs too, especially full breds of almost any kind. May not have some of the advantages of a pup, but could help with the longevity issue. I prefer a pup and a trust fund, so that's what we did.

Seize the day if you see a great gun that you want going by, or a hunting/ fishing opportunity. I like being married to my dear wife of 40+ years, so the dog idea is a no go.

Time waits for no man.
Watching my friends age out of the game is troubling some days but also reminds me to get on it. My Shadow Oaks Bo pup is coming up on 3. Time to hit it.
Paraguayan pigeons in the summer would be a nice trip if the shooting was hot.
Out there doing it best I can.
