Gunter, You got the main part right. The human race has exceeded the planet's carrying capacity. We are the only organism that destroys its own habitat. Or, as Mark Twain points out, the only animal who blushes, or needs to. We have succeeded in building a world so complicated we're not capable of managing or sustaining it.
