It's a 702. The gun in question doesn't have the shouldered forend or "SAFE" in gold that the 701 has.

700 is the base model, Identified by trade name being Roll stamped as "Webley & Scott" on top of Right Barrel Hand tube,"Birmingham England" on LH tube, "Webley & Scott" Roll Stamped on action sides.
The next Grade 702 was a 700 with better wood.
The 701 which is the top grade had Webley & Scott Birmingham ,England. engraved along rib or Barrel if fitted with Churchill Rib.
Often with drop points, some beading to fences,Gold inlaid "SAFE"on top tang. Shoulders on fore end wood.
Minor variances included models listed as 712,720,728 denoting gauge were marketed to the US market

The Scott book describes those as being "special versions of the Model 700 designed specifically for the American market", but they certainly look like 702's to me: Cheek panels and drop points, which the 700 never had.

TY, the pics are of 1 gun. It's my understanding the diff. is good/better/best engraving and wood as models progress 700 good / 702 better / 701 best. My question is, is their a visual "tell" or stamp that denotes a 702 from a 701?

I've never seen a 702 that did not have Gold SAFE and cut engraved naming of barrels. That's about as far an absolute(ish)
statement as I can make.

Hugh, I think you meant 701 with the gold SAFE.

I don't think so. From top to bottom of the 4 guns you listed, I'm 99% that 1 and 4 are 700's, and 99% that #2 is a 702. (Note that it has cheek panels, drop points, and more engraving than either 1 or 4.) I think 3 is also a 700, even though it has more engraving than 1 or 4. (Engraving changed over the years.) But it does not have cheek panels/drop points like #2 does. I'd defer to Hugh because he's seen more of them than I have, but I can't recall any 702's without the panels/drop points.
