I had a great day today. Met with one of our young members and had a super time in our favorite gun shop.
We found four very interesting guns. One magnificent four barreled German wonder that went from shotgun to double rifle. I may take an inventory and trade for that one.
Two that I bought and one I put on hold.
It is one of the bought guns that I want your thoughts on.
It is a 16 gauge (so marked) Ithaca Hammerless.Serial number 127XX.
Damascus barrels and here is the kicker. The bores are 14 gauge.
Do you think that it has been back bored? Or is it probable that it was this way from the factory? I think the back boring is highly unlikely on a Damascus barreled gun of that age and gauge.
What say you???
Best,
John

I did not measure them yet, but just eyeballing their thickness, at the muzzle, they have to be at least .030.
Yeh, yeh, I know. My eyeballing is far from desirable, but I really think that if 16 gauge tubes were bored to 14 gauge, that I could read thru them.
Am I in left field???
Best,
John

Somewhere, I have an English hammergun by Moore(I think) that is stamped 14 bore but is 12 bore, or has been modified for 12. If your eyeball can do a laser scan for the 0.030 inch, I would ask if there were a stamping error?

No stamping error here. The gun is stamped 16. All the stamps are as I would expect to see on an original, unchanged Ithaca.
My friend and highly regarded member of the sales and trading team at this shop measured them. They measured as a 14 gauge would.
I can see absolutely no evidence of any reamer, hone or tool in the bores or chambers.
Best,
John

Measured the bores with what instrument and came up with what figure in thousandths, at what point in the bore?

Bill:
I did not state well.
The bore gauge used is one of a professional quality, but I was not given the number. What I meant to say was that the walls, at the muzzle, appeared to be at least .030 in thickness. This meant, to me, that the barrels could not have been bored out to 14 gauge. It meant that they were 14 gauge from the beginning and the chambers were 16 gauge.
Does this not seem reasonable???
I left the gun with Steve Hutton and I have no doubt that he will measure them and we should definitely know for certain.
I will have all the numbers in a couple of days.
Best,
John

I say it's not likely a 16 guage left the Ithaca factory with 14 bore barrels.
