It has the shouldered fore end as Hugh had mentioned as well as the drop points.

Here's a confirmed 701. Note the gold "SAFE" in one of the photos, and the more extensive engraving. Also very nice wood.

Larry,

Look at the shouldered forend on the gun from Cabela's. It is a 701 or at least has a 701 forend,

The 701 has that feature + SAFE in gold. The 702 did not have either.

The wood quality supposed to better & the engraving is a bit more extensive on the 701 as compared to the 702 but it would be tough for me to distinguish a 701 from a 702 based on the engraving & especially the wood quality as it varies a lot from gun to gun & I've seen 702 guns with more attractive wood than some 701 guns.

Another & internal difference is that both of my 701 guns have a locking screws on the cocking lever pivot screws, a feature that the 700 guns don't have. I've never had a 702 apart so I don't know about them.

To the OP,

I have 2 701 W&S guns & as far a I know there is no marking on the guns that identifies the grade, only the features.

Good catch on the Cabela's gun, guys. I missed the forend clue.

Howie, your last one is a 702.

The Brits didn't help by not marking the grade. And of course they succeed in confusing the heck out of everyone with their numbering system. 700--lowest grade; 702--mid-grade; 701--highest. But they were also somewhat confusing on the Model 400 (which the 700 replaced) as well. I owned a Model 400 Grade 1. Full coverage fine scroll engraving. The lowest grade 400 was the Grade 3.

Not really ancient. The chamber length mark indicates it's some time between 1925-54.
