It's a very fine shotgun. He's been given a $10,000 estimate of its "worth". More importantly to him, is that it was his Grandfather's gun that he had custom built for him. He doesn't want to touch the gun or do anything that would impact its appearance.

It may become a seldom shot gun. He has an 870 for ducks and found a 20 ga Beretta SXS that patterned just fine for him. So, the 20 ga will get used for sporting clays and upland birds unless he finds a non-invasive way of raising the comb.

Sounds like moleskin may be the first approach.
