The whimbrel is a wader in the large family Scolopacidae.
It is one of the most widespread of the curlews,
breeding across much of subarctic North America,
Asia and Europe as far south as Scotland

The whimbrel is a species of curlew, genus Numenius, which includes several very similar species.

Because the curlew's bill is longer than the whimbrel's. In picture comparisons the bird in the engraving much more closely resembles the curlew.
