Hope you get something back up and running soon, Miller. I appreciate your posts here, and would miss them.
I got rid of AT & T a few months ago myself, keith. My situation was exactly as you described. It felt good to make that final call to them, telling them to discontinue my service. I live way out in the sticks and never had a good enough cell phone signal to depend on it in an emergency. But, I bit the bullet and invested in a Wilson Electronics cell phone signal booster. I mounted the external antenna at about 60' height outside, pointing it towards the nearest Verizon tower. When we plugged it in we immediately went from a "one bar" signal strength to "four bars" with 4G. The savings from not paying AT &T for the landline will pay for the booster in a matter of months. BTW, the booster works with more than one phone at the time, and works with any network company. It just boosts the signal it receives outside and re-transmits it inside the house.
Take care friend, SRH
