Re #1, I've found that in some cases, productive coverts for both grouse and woodcock can be located right on main roads. When I first moved to WI, one of the best spots I found was at the junction of two paved roads--one of which was a relatively busy highway. I don't know if everyone avoided it because they thought it was too obvious, or maybe they were worried about their dogs. (The latter, in that case, was a legitimate concern. I only hunted it with older dogs under very reliable control.) Quite a few years ago, I found the same thing to be true of a couple coverts located along a fairly well-traveled paved road in the UP.

It's great to have those out of the way secret honey holes. But sometimes there are honey holes right in plain sight.
