One publication (can't remember which :() did a test using VH or VHE with 1/2 choke or less using small "upland-type" US-made steel shotshells. There was no damage to the gun after 500 rounds were fired.
The English go further suggesting only steel shot cartridges matching chamber length should be used, ie don't shoot 2&3/4" steel cartridges in 3" or 3.5" chamber. Needless to say, old English guns proofed for lead shot are not steel shot compatible.
