I agree the MSD's on Antimonial Butter would make you pass it by.Many of the old recipes mention Lead & Mercury contents. I drunk water from Lead pipes for 30 years and I still have Mercury thermometers, and I've broken a few. If we all used MSD's as the bible none of us would be married, now there's a hazard. DT, yes a boffin could analyse the contents of your jars, but we would all be disappointed with the report.

I took the can that I had used to simmer the mixture and where all would no pour out, I added about 8 oz of turpentine, warmed a bit more and poured it up. It seems to work great highly diluted like this in giving a very thin layer/application. Probably more useful in the final stages of finishing.

I hope the Venice turps from Hawthorne Products in Dunkirk, IN is the Real McCoy cause I've got two pints of it to make me feel better about the shipping charge. Smells kinda treely and it's thick and got a big brush applicator so seems it's the horse cuticle sort. Must have been a stock bodger run on this stuff as couple of vet suppliers suddenly were out of stock Labor Day weekend. What's a good source for Carnauba? Can I go with strait beeswax instead?

jack I got my carnauba from Highland Hardware, in Atlanta Ga. They are good folks, have a nice high end hardware hand tool business and a good internet presence. I like to vist there when in Ga.

This is where I get both. http://www.texasdrone.com/ I remember the price being good but there is not carnauba price that I can see. Give them a call. To finally give you an answer to the beeswax substitution, I have never attempted it. Carnauba is very hard and and is difficult to remove. For protection I would favor it over the softer beeswax, which makes a nice soft luster top coat.

Thought maybe someone might know the derivation of "slacum"? Is it maybe slake-um as in the thirst of this chunk of firewood must be slaked? Some other archaic verbiage? Anyone? Getting carnauba flakes from "milk paint" folks in Quakertown PA.
