I was browsing Holt's upcoming auction (next week) and found a very interesting pair of Purdey's. They were made for the Paris Exhibition in 1900 and are hammer ejector guns, steel barrels, with island type locks. They are maqnificent. I admit that I have a weakness for hammer guns and these are as good as it gets---especially with ejectors. They think the ejectors are original but there is the possibility that the ejectors were retro fitted. Estimate is 16,000-20,000 pounds. In recent years Purdey's have made a small number of hammer ejectors and I'm sure the price far exceeds the estimate for these 100+ year old beauties. Too rich for me but it is fun to dream about. If you read their "In the Gunroom" segment, you will discover that although made for the Paris Exhibition, they were not displayed at the exhibition. A very interesting story. Min walls on the pair are 22-20; 24-20. Also, the ejectors could have been later additions as the original order does not specify ejectors.

They were featured in a recent You Tube video, Part Two, showcasing guns in this upcoming auction, both are near an hour. Very well produced.

CalgaryBill;
Both you and I agree that they are magnificent guns and I would I would like to own them as the Purdey island lock hammer ejector has always been a goal of ownership for me. Since the downturn of enthusiasm for vintage double guns starting several years ago "opportunities" to sale and purchase guns like this have incurred some "rainy days". These ejector hammer guns are in the ranks of English gun types and vintage that REAL collectors go after, if they meet certain rigid criteria. Unfortunately these guns do not meet two of the most important collector's criteria of Purdey island lock hammer guns: original barrels and ejector system that are original to the gun. Even with that problem they are still guns that I would covet. Considering these two negative issues and the issues of entire British people's attention to the medical conundrum issues at hand in the country, the final "hammer" price may not meet expectations. Holt's may be better off postponing the entire auction. Of course having said this, I do not know what will occur in the remote bidding that Holt's usually has if the sale goes forward on the day as current expected--this is an important unknown issue as many/most serious collectors do not personally attend the auctions.

We share a love for Purdey hammerguns, particularly with island locks and ejectors. I had the incredibly good fortune to purchase a Purdey bar-in-wood over 40 years ago and that whetted my appetite for fine hammerguns. I agree that the virus situation will certainly adversely affect the selling price. However, there is an opportunity for someone to add a very rare gun to their collection. I will follow the auction closely. Bill

The auction is indeed taking place next week. Holt's have waived the 5% fee for on line bidding.

I think some great deals will be had this auction. Lots of folks out of the bidding game with the changes that have taken place in the last two weeks, me included. I have my eye on something but I just do not feel like spending money at the moment. I think some other feel the same. Steve
