I was never treated badly by the civilians when I was in uniform. The ultimate test was hitch hiking up and down I-95, sometimes in the middle of the night. I never stood out there for long and got some great long rides. Once, I was let off at an exit for Petersburg, Virginia. A trooper stopped and told me I was not allowed to hitch rides on the Interstate. He took me up several miles, let me out, and told me that was the end of his territory, and good luck.
