Gentleman,
I recently got my first Winchester model 21. I believe it to be a 1950's vintage gun. I noticed that when I fire a round that the forend seems to have a little forward movement. Is this normal or do I have a problem?

Do you mean the wood moves or the forearm metal moves? If it's the wood, can you move it with hand pressure? Not likely a big problem, but check and see if all the forearm screws are tight. A "good" gunsmith can fix it.

I heard the forends have nasty tendency to "rattle". I hope it's just a rumor! Be sure to shake them barrels.

I own eight of them and have handled more than I can remember and I have never seen one with a loose forend. Must be a rumor unless someone really goofed up the gun somehow...... Maybe put a different forearm on it?

The Model 21 forend lug and ribs are occasionally known to become loose and need to be resoldered. Shooting the gun with a loose forend lug can cause other damage like kinked lower ribs. Give your forend lug the wiggle test.

I will give the forend lug the wiggle test this afternoon.I belive it is tight. Right now the forend seems to be snug. When I fire the gun there is a slight forward movement of the wood which snaps back in place. Could this have something to do with the spring component of the forend that fits on the lug?

Max,
If it's a beavertail, check the recoil reinforcing screw that
threads into the forend iron from the front of the forend wood.
If it's not tight, this could cause your movement.
