The 1880 patent date was for the "J" spring that W.H. Baker invented and patented. It was used on his line of guns and also on L.C. Smiths from Syracuse and Fulton.
On the L.C. Smith site the pictures posted show that the Syracuse for-end metal was wider than the Fulton for-end metal.

Runs, the Syracuse hammerless guns, the cocking plate was built in and not replaceable.
