If there is a good idea of what type of shells should be used, does a chamber gauge help much in this situation.

By the way, the $450.00 bore gauge in the Galazan ad is a wonderful alternative to the $125.00 Skeet's type gauge. It measures 28 to 10 gauge, which the Skeet's gauge will not do. Although admittedly more expensive than Tony's $45.00 chamber gauge, it will measure chambers as well as bores.

Plugs are fine but can be misleading , some older chambers may be a little tighter than modern ones so a modern plug will no go in fully . I have had this on numerous 12 bores when the plug would not go all the way to the bottom of the chamber , but a couple of turns of a new chamber reamer cleaned them out with out deepening . Eye and a steel rule should give you a fairly close reading depending on the cones. Guns of this period made for roll turnover cases often had much shorter cones .

A wall thickness gauge gives a very accurate measurement of chamber length. Just slide it in and as you get near the front of the chamber go slow and watch the dial. An abrupt change will be where the forcing cone begins.
