In a weak moment, I reloaded mixture of No. 4s and 5s vacuumed from hidden places. What are likely consequences of different patterns, late arrivals on ducks? I've kept the shells for years but decided to give them a try.

It should likely be perfection since you “dressed’em to the nines.” :-)

4X5 duplex loads will be fine. One great load from days gone by was 2X4 or 2X5. I killed a fair number of ducks at range and geese fairly close with this combination. But that was back in the days of legal lead shot. Steel should be even less difference between 4&5.

In the late 60's early 70's I ran across a lot of old lead shot which I routinely reloaded and used for ducks. I had all kinds of mixtures but they worked fine on ducks. I don't reload any more but when I did reload steel I usually used whatever combination I had, which was usually 2's and 4's. No problem with them.

You might check the actual weights of the loads if you are loading volumetrically with mixed shot sizes. There is the potential for greater compacting for lack of a better word - leading to heavier than expected loads. Not sure it would be significant.

Assuming it is a safe load and steel as you mentioned you use on ducks, just have at it? If by late arrival you mean shot string, isn't it most likely that this is for fairly close decoying birds? Good luck, and careful if things are icing over.

I still shoot some old Rem Duplex Steel in 2x6, BBx1, BBx2. Also Fed Heavyweight 2+ (2x4). Pretty sure some of the current production HeviSteel loads are duplex. You should be fine.
