What is a good lube for the hinge-pin/trunnions that won't be displaced easily under the percussion pressure of a double? There was some lengthly discussion on doublegun.com (before reorganization by Dave) back two/three years ago, but I'll be darned if I can find the thread.

I prefer a grease. Auto Zone has an "Engine Assembly Lube. It's a clear, sticky lube. Another similar lube is RCS Case Lube. I don't like anything with grphite or moly-disulfide in it, because I would be wearing most of it. Most important factor is to clean it frequently and replace whatever you use. IMO, that's more important than the brand.

Mobile 1 universal synthetic. A toothpick tip full is plenty. Stable from 450 degrees F down to minus 130 or so.
Best,

I agree with all the above. Having said that, I like the product STOS alot. (Although I will use about any good clean white type grease.) And, I DO clean after every use with a toothbrush and use new grease each time.

I've been using oil. I just started using a grease sold by a guy from the gun club Ken Owens.
I would say dust and weather conditions would dictate if it needs to be cleaned and replaced everytime you use the gun.

One of the primary byproducts of combustion is carbon, reason enough to clean & relube after each use. It takes but a moment to do .. and once you get tiny gritty stuff embedded in the hook or on the pin its tough to stop it from lapping.

The suggestions by all the above would be fine by me also. I happen to normally use what Ted suggests. I use Mobil 1 syn grease because I have a greasegun full of it for my truck. But I'm of the opinion that just about any kind of lube will do the trick as well as anything else in most cases. Temp range of the lube may be important to those that will use their guns in extremes. I'm not sure how the Vaseline mix would do for 120F dove hunts or late season phez in the arctic (north of Bakersfield, to me). The specialty gun lubes seem very expensive and I haven't seen anything to suggest they work better than Mobil 1 auto grease.
