"If doesn't work out, ..."
How will you know if it doesn't work out? Your choice will be a great lube as long as you use it.

I've been using Jim Legg's recommended engine assembly lube for a couple years now. This was made by Coastal, as I recall. Excellent results. My Browning XS has seen nothing but this product and is as tight as when new 7,500 targets ago.
Don't overthink this. What's important is a film of lube that stays where it's put.

I have not performed an objective test of meltpts. but my guess is RIG is a liquid at a lower temp than Vaseline. I've spilled a RIG tin in summer; I've had the Vaseline concoction open in the truck in summer heat and don't remember it liquifying.

I reccomend AstroGlide. Never leave home without it. Particularly good for older pieces, they seem to benefit from a good lube job. np

Cpt, that is only a partial answer. Preparation H serves both purposes and as an added benefit, does not leak in a trunk case. I got this suggestion from a Virginia vageegee mechanic who is also quite a collector of fine double guns. Murphy Use Preperation H with caution...it can cause your ejectors to freeze up.
