Conley's SBT book is the only reason besides the picture of Flues premises Buffalo from Robt. that I knew that Flues had done anything but design the eponymous Ithaca model. I have both 4E SBT w/ 5E wood and 4E double with swamped rib and I agree that the overall package--checkering, wonderful chisel work on the action--holds up well in comparison to the later NIDs.

Jack,
Haven't you seen the Marlin lever action schutzen?...or the Ballard single shot schutzen in Grant's book on single shot rifles?...the two premier peices at the Winchester Cody museum are both Flues handmade guns...one was made for Rudolph Kornbrath, the other for western film star Tom Mix...both are said to be Kornbrath engraved

It's and 1881 model in 45/70...note the Swiss butt plate

Rabbit,
This single shot photo is from Grant's book "More Single Shot Rifles". Even under the scrutiny of Grant's careful eye, the action shows no sign of being an original Ballard #6 model. This gun is signed "E. Flues E. Sag. Mich" and 1885 and #1...it would appear that this was Emil's first gun, a guild gun of sorts...
This is a little choppy in terms of sentence structure, but I'll just blurt it out...if he was in East Saginaw in 1885 and produced this gun, it might be safe to say that he just completed his apprenticeship or nearly so... Then in January of 1895 he applied for a patent while living in Bay City, Michigan...in an interview he stated that early on in his career he worked out west......from 95 - 1906 he was in business with Robert Wrege...then he moved to NYS...that leaves only that 9-10 year window between '85 and '95 when he could have been out west fixin' Colts and the like...
I forget exactly and my Flues folder is not within reach, but the problem is, that date of 1885 put's him somewhere around 16-17 years old at the time of producing this single shot...I'm gonna hafta review my own notes again...I'm not as frosty as I used to be...

Sounds like he was a heck of a gunsmith...How did his shotgun design put the rest of American gun designers down on their "knees" ?

Two interesting notes...Henry Allender (Hollenbeck's friend) received a patent, while living in Detroit Michigan, in 1884, for a hammerless cocking mechanism, a lock up,with a single trigger...and...for the St. Hubertus and Muzzle Blasts readers...rifle #1 had a talisman made up of 4 hearts in a square pattern, pointed outward, but not touching, with another single heart nearby

Please if someone else could answer Joe's question....if any of you happen to know, off hand, the production numbers such as...
total number of Flues produced...year of introduction for the Sterlingworth,Trojan, Fulton. etc...it won't take much to see that Ithaca flooded the market with the Flues model...

Walt S. says (p. 66, Ithaca Gun From the Beginning) 223,000 Flues model 1908-25. He estimates 4700 Flues SBTs included in that total.

223,000....that's probably more than the combined total output of every Fox, Parker, and LC Smith, of every model ever produced...I'll do some looking tomorrow...after the samurai damascus steel PBS special

Thanks Rabbit, but don't waste any more of your time answering Joe's question...he's gone right back to his smart-ass snide comments again...as if the data you looked up for him is worthless ...

Parker made over 240,000 guns and I believe the Smith totaled over 400,000 so they had the edge on numbers not even counting Fox.
