For one who prides himself in academics, research and data - I see nothing but jam session...and now jealousy!

rabbit,
That's exactly correct...we can only hope that Walt is forthcoming with real info to share...info with substance...you watch and see if I don't match his contributions nugget for nugget....it would be unfair, to say the least, if I spilled my guts, and he sat back and printed a copy of the thread and saved it as "research"...

Lowell, Stay off of my threads, unless you want another go another round.....last warning Lowell...it's truce, or you stay away from me...

That's right George, ya gotta be careful where you surf, there's some great white research sharks in these waters...Walt's eyes rolled back and he showed us his gums a few pages back...it was really scary, you should have been there

Complicated design??? some people think, even today and on this board, that the Parker is overly complicated...What else then detracted people from buying the early Ithaca?? Was it the Baker designed hammer gun??
All the best

treblg1958,
First, I don't think Minier and Lewis models ever really got much past New York State before they where discontinued, making those models the rare and interesting by my standards....I can only guess what drove the American shotgun consumer back then...but it's fitting that you named the LC Smith, Parker, and Remington as the chosen standard...Parkers, and especially Smiths clang shut like the expression says..."like a bank vault"...there is something to be said for the sound of safety each and every time you load the gun...I suspect that's why the doctors and lawyers of the world have traditionally picked Parker, as their gun of choice.
I don't think the Crass was a bad design...maybe it was the marketing, but more probable is that it was the cost vs: eye appeal...one thing is appearant, Ithaca was on the look out for "faster, cheaper, better" during the model variations fron Crass to Flues....

I think that the era of 1890-1900 was a very difficult one for all gun makers. New powders were increasing pressures and old designs would be hard pressed to handle the hotter loads. Then, as now, shooters love heavy loads for the field and Ithaca knew that their current model would not stand up to "new modern" loads.

Emil came along at exactly the right time with just what they needed to stay in business. It was strong enough for "modern loads", easier to make and had a clean new look. It was the perfect fit for them. He on the other hand got the song and dance and then the door later. But is that not often the way of things? How many doors did Lefever get by new partners?

Robert,
The T Lug in the barrel lug has to be a wear compensator to compensate for hinge wear. It would pull the breech into the standing breech and on face (when the gun was fully closed) regardless of how worn the hinge was.

What do you think?

What do you mean about the Flues gun with the removeable rib?
Ross
