I'd suspect that wood at least is refinished. It is an early gun with only two patent dates and three screws on the trigger plate. I have number 63 a bit plainer with Laminated barrels. By guns in the three-digit serial number range there is a third patent date on the trigger plate and a fourth screw.

That wood is short of the metal in too many places. A nice looking gun none the less.

I have never seen an article that really delves into these A.E. Whitmore guns. There have been articles on the American Arms Co.'s earlier George H. Fox side-swing hammer guns. American Arms Co. also made revolvers and lower priced side-cocking single and double barrels.
There was a good article on George H. Fox's American Arms Co. in The American Rifleman, April 1970. There was an article on some of the George H. Fox side-swing hammer doubles by William Furnish and James A. Nelson in the Winter 1994, The Double Gun Journal. I have a reproduction American Arms Co. catalog, offered years ago by Dr. William Paul Smith's PRP Americana, from I believe the late 1870s.
Then there is the mind blowing A.E. Whitmore sidelock double Tom Archer did an article on in the Winter 2021, The Double Gun Journal.

The auction states the wood is refinished. But still a super nice and very rare American double. The engraving is super nice.

I personally know the seller and the wood was in fact refinished years ago by previous owners son in shop class and unfortunately over sanded ,all metal finishes with the exception of the top lever and trigger guard are original, and I trust this individual implicitly

Mr. Dawe, that is not what I would call "professionally refinished" as described by the sales agent, but it explains a lot. Under those circumstances, I might bid on it. Thank you for the information.
