The key here is the topic is about a upland gun, not a target gun. So I don't really think you can pick the perfect barrel length as most guns balance, feel, handle, come up, etc. differently. The perfect upland gun is the one that carries and "comes up" the best for each person irregardless of the barrel length.

Most of mine are 30" barrel length.....but that's just how I like 'em. Hope you can try it out before you buy.

As above.
Who cares - if you like it, it feels good, you shoot it well etc. Overall weight, choking (because our guns have fixed chokes!), stock and forend shapes, balance etc are more important.
Interesting theory re 2x LOP; there's also Greener's 40x calibre. For me they both work out at or about 29"; a lot of Woodwards bear that length too.
