Apply with a white washcloth until the cloth no longer picks up the gunk. Use a soft toothbrush to scrub out the checkering. You might use Howard Feed-N-Wax or Goddard's Cabinet Maker's Wax after the cleaning. https://sites.google.com/a/damascusknowledge.com/www/home
