Hello, How do automatic ejectors work? Does the act of firing one barrel make that side eject or what?Does the weight of an unfired shell keep it from ejecting when the gun is opened? Thanks in advance.

The firing of a shell sets the "trigger" that trips the ejector spring as the gun is opened. The fired shell(s) are ejected from the chamber and the unfired shell(s) are lifted sufficient by the extractors for removal if so desired. The ejector spring powers a hammer that strikes the end of the extractor, causing it to "kick" the hull out. Note that ejection requires split extractors. Extraction-only can use a single piece extractor that always lifts both shells, but has no "kicker" capability.

RDH,
Here's a pic that'll help Rocket's explanation.
When the ejector trip rod inside the reciever is pushed out, it'll trip that sear, release the hammer, and the hammer
whacks the ejector. The hammers in the picture are "fired" and will be cocked when the gun is closed.

And OT to my friends here, I did round off the fore end despite all the comments regarding it's
quadrilateral appearance *sniff*

Ok,I 'm beginning to understand now. Thanks for the pictures and explanations. I'm still partial to plain extractors though.

Much better. I see a future for you as a hand model if the stockmaking thing doesn't pan out.

RHD,
I agree that plain extractors are not a bad thing - I find myself cupping my hand over the opened breech to catch the empties from my ejector guns. There are few opportunities where ejectors are a practical necessity. It's a pet peeve of mine to find someone else's empties afield too. That said, it is really cool to drop a gun open, and - "tonk" - clear chambers!

When you open the gun the cocking rod of the fired side pushes the sear off the ejector to let it kick, I take it. The cocking rod would be in position to push on the sear because the hammer is forward on that side, and needs to be reset, if I get it.

J Hall, there's a well written and detailed explanation for O/U ejector function in the Browning SP manual on page 2.

Is there a way to disable the ejectors and have them just function as extractors? I too would prefer just extractors. My R. Gamba usually ejects both shells anyways, even though only one has been shot.

There is a way to disable ejectors because I have read posts on other sites where folkd did exactly that. I don't know how though. Personally, I wouldnt do that to any of my collectible sxs's though. Ejectors add value to them. A shooter gun with that is modern or not really collectible I'd do it though because I really preferr extractors to ejectors.
