I've waited to post this so as not to sidetrack Jon's thread. It seems that responses have slowed now so I'll ask for some help from the brain trust on my own "why" that I've wondered about for 25+ years. I bought this 16ga Stevens 530A in a small town gun shop for a combination truck gun/loaner. It's served its purpose well but I've always wondered why the pattern of holes in the forend, trigger guard and front trigger.

The forend has six pairs of holes which line up with the bottom hole in the trigger guard. I have a theory but I don't want to prejudice fresh thinking on their purpose.

Thoughts?
