Just recently I was watching 'The Blue and the Gray', 'Gettysburg', and 'Gods and Generals'. Sorry, I got carried away. My sincere apologies to our Southern friends. Nov. 2007 American Rifleman has article entitled 'Sharpshooters of the Confederacy'. I enjoyed it a lot.

Hopefully they will put the sight boss and folding rear back on it like the old ones. There is something about the look of pre 64 barrels.

Kimber isnt exactly fine craftsmanship either. No better or worse than Winchester. I've built rifles on both actions. I would take a Winchester any day.

Bill, why do you prefer the Winchester over the Kimber?? Is it the control round feeding? The barrels? I always heard that no matter how junky the Remington 700 was they (Remington) had the best barrels on a bolt gun? Am I full of it or what??? All the best

I guess its great WRA is going to start up the Mod 70 again....but why? I can't think of a more competive market to jump in. From my own experience....Remington does have the best barrels on a factory gun, and I've sampled a bunch of them.

Remington may have the best barrels but their triggers and safeties are part rattlesnake! I am still finding some of their messed up systems among the rifles of students in my hunter education classes that have to be retrofitted with new assemblies to make them safe. We even had an instructor's rifle go off with the release of the safety during a field day demonstration. They say the problem was in the older models which they have recalled but some of the later ones seem vulnerable too unless the trigger pull is two handed. Couple this with the decline in their fit and finish and Remington's bolt rifle just isn't my choice.

Well....I guess I dont like the Kimber action because its big. I also dislike round bottom actions as a general principal. Your probably thinking Im being pig headed and your absolutely right. The action finish on the Kimber is incredibly rough. They cover it up with a flat bluing (I think). Strip off the bluing and the surface of the action looks like moon craters.

Very cool that the W70 is back.
ISO SCHMISO. It's just another quality program. I worked QA from the layout table to the management and quality engineering for many yrs. But.....one does need a quality program when making manufactured products regardless of opinions here. Even the old hand crafted high end guns had a quality program...the journeyman/boss/shop foreman/owner/whoever, but they did checks of the same critical areas on all guns thru either checklists or by drawings. It's foolish to believe even the smallest shops didn't have notes or drawings to check to.
I had a 70's Rem 700 that was smooth as silk and had a great trigger that could be safely adjusted to about 2 lbs where it was set for the last 3 decades and never once AD'd during the 2000 plus rounds thru it. I bought a Rem 700 action about 6-7 yrs ago and found it so rough that I cut myself on it's edges. The trigger was very heavy and couldn't be adjusted low enough for my tastes. Sold it. The late Win 70 BOSS equipped, controlled round feed .264 that replaced it was a real nice part and will print with some target guns.
