I've been on four mission trips to Honduras 99' to 02'. Hurricane Mitch in 98' destroyed much of the countryside and crops, many folks were forced to go to the larger cities, and few of the young men could find employment. The drug gangs, 'drogas', became and are a terrible problem in Tegucigalpa. Bad sign when the career missionaries are all packing 9mms. We were also in Marcala and Palestina-Patuca (on the border with Nicaragua.) Much safer, and much nicer folk, but still very difficult lives. San Pedro Sula is safer than Tegucigalpa, and the north coast and Roatan are beautiful.
I would be SURE that whoever is coordinating your visit is connected to an U.S. based outfit, experienced, and legit ie. demand and check references. But your $s and the dove you shoot will definitely help some very needy people.
