The trails up here are a big part of it for me. I grew up in the deciduous forests of northwestern Pennsylvania but moved out to Colorado for work after collage. For years, the hardest part of autumn was being someplace where it just wasn't much to celebrate. Up here on the Canadian border, it's a big deal every year. I get up in the morning, pack my lunch, stop and fuel up the truck, and then go get deep into the forest to walk the trails. Some are like cathedrals and some are nothing more than an overgrown yard (clearcuts up here produce that effect). All are necessary for the successional forests needed to propagate ruffed grouse.
