Many guns were upgraded from non-rebounding to the better rebounding style so dating a gun by whether it has rebounding locks is iffy.

And of course some buyers probably ordered guns with non-rebounding after rebounders were available because they were familiar/comfortable with them.

Doesn't your friends gun have proof marks? Have you tried dating it from these marks?

Only so much dating can be done with proof marks....

This is just speculation on my part....but I see the lock as one of the most expensive parts on a gun.

This in my opinion leaves out the lower grade guns as far as being upgraded to rebounding locks.

Yep, locks and barrels were the expensive bits.

That is why we can read stories about guns that were remade from percussion to pinfire to centerfire.

I think that lower grade guns would still have been the pride of their owner and may have been upgraded.

Rebounders took over the industry and from what I have read, there were a few years where 'smiths made a living (ok thats an overstatement) upgrading lots of guns of differing grades.

It is hard to find a non-rebounding centerfire hammergun from that era.

The non-rebounding guns are there all you need do is look....I've ran up on plenty in my search for hammer guns.

There was a 'small time' frame from muzzleloading to pinfire...non-rebounding to rebounding centerfire...I think that's the reason for less non-rebounding more than the conversions.
