The club I shoot at harvests it's lead shot every year. They have since 1947. The one club I shoot at in Florida is a "steel only" trap club anyway, so......not that big of a deal to shoot steel shot. Manufacturers can make new clays guns with barrels that shoot steel, so......not a big deal to me. If you had bothered to actually read what is going on, in some of the links posted, one of the legislators believes children are being poisoned by lead shot at their trap leagues, and that “endangered loons” ( loons are NOT endangered) are threatened by hunters and trap shooters using lead shot. If you or any other clown bothers to “follow the science” you can and will discover both points are completely false. But, it is a religion, not fact based, so, no big deal to you. Best, Ted

It is indeed at the state level where the danger of lead restrictions or bans can become law. In some cases, they make sense. For example, most public wetlands in Iowa are restricted to nontox only for all kinds of hunting. Seeing that pheasants are hunted on those areas as well as waterfowl, that ban makes sense. But generally speaking--other than perhaps on public land where doves are hunted and shot fall is much heavier than it is in most other upland situations--lead restrictions don't really make sense.
But specifically concerning Minnesota, my file on lead shot includes "Report of the Nontoxic Shot Advisory Committee Submitted to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Fish and Wildlife Division, December 12, 2006". One of the principles on which that committee agreed was: "It is inevitable that lead shot will have to be restricted for all shotgun hunting at some future time."
Meanwhile, there are bright spots. Tall Timbers, a 500 acre quail research facility in Florida where 8,000 shells had been fired (meaning that shot fall was much heavier than in typical upland hunting scenarios: They examined the gizzards of 241 quail. Only 3 contained pellets. Their conclusion:
"Sport hunting of wild bobwhite populations on upland habitats appears to produce a low potential for lead poisoning compared to lead deposition in association with waterfowl and dove hunting.

Nobody has answered my question......doesn't California have a statewide ban on using lead to take any wildlife? Or is that incorrect? Just asking.

.....This is affecting me, probably more than any of you, but it is something we are going to have to start to live with. Good luck. Me, me, me, nasty business this self-centered mentality. Equally concerning, hours of daily petroleum gas and diesel running of wildlife department one ton pickups to retrieve kalicondors, only to burden the fragile power grid with lead chelation therapies. When will we learn, countless evs could have been charged, and kept out of land fills and ocean dumping grounds, while moving condors in the luxuries that Jimmy has become accustomed to.

Jimmy , this may be futile, but I will try. When the science doesn't support the process or change the Govt wants you need to ask why are they doing this. Right now Trap shooting is making a resurgence among High School kids and most, not all, Dem/Libs don't like this. They don't want young people to understand let alone like firearms. So if you can't outlaw something how do you stop it. Well one way is make it too expensive. When Obama was Pres he realized trying to outlaw all guns was a non starter, but he could make it more expensive to shoot, how the EPA shut down the last lead smelter in the US. Ammo prices go up and a % of people quit shooting. It is death by a thousand cuts.
This ain't a dress rehearsal , Don't Let the Old Man IN

Goodness, more global warming. What is a more of a burning issue for me is....what do old gun guys shoot when lead is finally banned? We had bismuth for a while, and then "friendly shot". Tungsten matrix was another replacement mentioned for a while, but I believe it was too-hard for old guns? Where are we in the evolution of non-toxic shot these days?
