So, how did your son like shooting it? Did he find it more fun to shoot or to build?
What caliber?

45 caliber, he liked shooting it and probably would have liked it more, if he could have loaded it himself. Truthfully, my friend who was along brought an M-1 carbine. Thomas enjoyed shooting that a lot. I was the first time he shot a center fired rifle. He didn’t help that much with the building, there was a lot to do, but he isn’t big enough to run the lathe and mill yet.
Yet to me it was a wonderful day, it is one thing to want to finish a project and another to have someone to give the finished project too. It was great to get together with a friend that I don’t see that often and great to be shooting, even if it was watching my son shoot.

If you need another project, I bet the two of you could make a pistol loading stand. I do not have one, but I've seen guys make a little stand that sits on the bench holding the pistol muzzle up to make it easy to load with powder and ball. With that, he could probably load on his own with a little supervision.

Good point on the loading stand, that would help and also a better short starter. Neither should take long, tomorrow however it is back to work on the rifle for my daughter.

PhysDoc,
It seems that firing that M1 Carbine built a fire in your son that won't go away when he finds out about girls. When they start shooting older, they often skip over the late teens and early twenties. It's funny how you can get more enjoyment from watching your children (or in my case grand and great grandchildren) than shooting yourself. Good on you.
